Lata Mangeshkar was one of the greatest playback singers in Indian music history. Fondly known as the “Nightingale of India,” she mesmerized listeners with her melodious voice for more than seven decades. Her songs remain timeless and continue to be loved by generations of music enthusiasts.

Born on 28 September 1929 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest daughter of renowned classical singer and theatre artist Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. She developed an interest in music at a very young age and received her initial training from her father. Although she had limited formal education, her dedication to music helped her become one of the most respected singers in the country.

Lata Mangeshkar began her singing career in the 1940s and rose to prominence with the song “Aayega Aanewala” from the film Mahal (1949). Over the years, she became the voice behind countless hit songs in Hindi cinema and also recorded songs in Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and several other languages.

Some of her most popular songs include “Lag Ja Gale,” “Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh,” “Piya Tose Naina Laage Re,” “Tere Bina Zindagi Se,” “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo,” and “Luka Chuppi.” Her ability to express emotion through music made her one of the most sought-after playback singers in Indian cinema.

Throughout her illustrious career, Lata Mangeshkar received numerous honours, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

Lata Mangeshkar passed away on 6 February 2022 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, at the age of 92. Her extraordinary contribution to Indian music continues to inspire singers and music lovers around the world. She will always be remembered as one of the most iconic voices in the history of Indian cinema.
