Vandhana meets Arun, an Air Force pilot, and the two quickly fall in love. They secretly marry, but their happiness is short-lived when Arun dies in an aircraft accident. Because their marriage was never formally recognized, Vandhana is left in a vulnerable position while carrying Arun's child.
Vandhana gives birth to a son, Suraj. Unable to raise him openly under the circumstances, she allows him to be adopted by a childless couple. However, a mother's love prevents her from truly abandoning her child.
She later becomes Suraj's nanny, allowing her to remain close to him without revealing that she is actually his mother.
Years pass, and Suraj grows into a young man. He falls in love with Renu, who is connected to Vandhana's new life. When Vandhana sees Suraj, she immediately recognizes the striking resemblance between him and his late father Arun. She chooses not to reveal the truth because she fears that doing so could cause embarrassment and emotional turmoil for her son.
The story ultimately revolves around the revelation of Vandhana's identity, the sacrifices of motherhood, love, and the reunion of a mother and son.
The music of Aradhana was composed by S. D. Burman, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. The soundtrack became one of the most celebrated Hindi film albums of its generation.
