Sachin Dev Burman, popularly known as S. D. Burman, was one of the most influential music composers and singers in Indian cinema. Renowned for blending Indian folk melodies with classical and modern musical elements, he created some of the most memorable songs in Bollywood history. Born on 1 October 1906 in Comilla, Tripura (now in Bangladesh), S. D. Burman belonged to the royal family of Tripura. He was also greatly influenced by Bengali folk traditions, which later became a defining feature of his compositions.

S. D. Burman began his musical career as a singer and composer in Bengali music before moving to Mumbai to work in the Hindi film industry. During the 1940s and 1950s, he established himself as one of Bollywood’s leading music directors and went on to compose music for numerous successful films.

Throughout his illustrious career, S. D. Burman worked with legendary singers such as Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, and Hemant Kumar. His collaborations with filmmakers like Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy, Dev Anand, and Vijay Anand produced some of the finest soundtracks in Indian cinema.

Some of his most celebrated films include Guide, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Bandini, Jewel Thief, Aradhana, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, and Taxi Driver. Songs such as “Wahan Kaun Hai Tera,” “Gaata Rahe Mera Dil,” “Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara,” and “Sun Mere Bandhu Re” remain evergreen classics.

Apart from composing, S. D. Burman was also admired for his distinctive singing style, especially in folk-based and philosophical songs. His simple yet deeply expressive voice added a unique charm to his music.

S. D. Burman passed away on 31 October 1975 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His contribution to Indian music is considered invaluable, and he is remembered as one of the greatest music directors in the history of Indian cinema.
