Popularly known as "Disco King" and "Mithun Da," he revolutionized dance in Bollywood during the 1980s and emerged as one of the biggest superstars of Indian cinema. With a career spanning over five decades and more than 350 films across multiple languages, he is regarded as one of the finest and most versatile actors in Indian cinema.
Born in Kolkata, West Bengal, Mithun completed a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Scottish Church College before graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. He made his acting debut with Mrigayaa (1976), directed by Mrinal Sen, and won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his very first film.
After early successes in films like Surakksha and Tarana, Mithun achieved international fame with Disco Dancer (1982). The film became a massive blockbuster not only in India but also in the Soviet Union, China, and several other countries, making him one of the first Bollywood stars to enjoy global popularity. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he delivered numerous commercial hits, including Dance Dance, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Agneepath, Jallad, Ghulami, and Guru. He also earned acclaim for his performances in Bengali cinema and later became a popular television personality as the Grand Master on the dance reality show Dance India Dance.
In addition to acting, Mithun is a successful entrepreneur with interests in hospitality and has also served as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha). In recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema, he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan, among India's highest honours.
