Neel Kamal is a 1968 Hindi romantic thriller directed by Ram Maheshwari and produced by Pannalal Maheshwari. The film stars Waheeda Rehman, Manoj Kumar and Raaj Kumar in the lead roles, with Lalita Pawar, Balraj Sahni, Mehmood and Shashikala in supporting roles. The music was composed by Ravi, with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi.
The film follows Sita, a young woman who suffers from mysterious sleepwalking episodes. After marrying Ram, her strange behaviour becomes increasingly disturbing. She eventually discovers that her sleepwalking is connected to a past-life love story involving a sculptor named Chitrasen and a princess named Neel Kamal.
Combining romance, reincarnation, mystery, fantasy and family drama, Neel Kamal became a major commercial success and was the third highest-grossing Hindi film of 1968. Waheeda Rehman won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance.
The story begins with Sita Raichand, played by Waheeda Rehman, who goes on a college trip with her friends. During the trip, Sita falls into a mysterious sleepwalking episode and unknowingly walks onto a railway track.
Ram, played by Manoj Kumar, notices her and saves her from being hit by a train.
Sita's father, Mr. Raichand, is grateful to Ram for saving his daughter's life. He approaches Ram's family with a marriage proposal, and eventually Ram and Sita get married.
After the marriage, however, Ram notices that Sita's sleepwalking is not an ordinary condition. She repeatedly leaves the house at night and seems to be mysteriously drawn toward a particular place.
Sita herself does not fully understand what is happening to her.
Gradually, the mystery takes her back to a story from a previous birth.
In her past life, Sita was Princess Neel Kamal. She had been loved by Chitrasen, a talented sculptor played by Raaj Kumar.
Chitrasen's love for the princess was considered unacceptable because of their difference in social status. When he asks the king for Neel Kamal's hand, the king becomes furious and orders that Chitrasen be buried alive as punishment.
Chitrasen's love, however, does not die. His soul remains attached to Neel Kamal for centuries, waiting for the opportunity to meet her again.
In her present life, Sita's sleepwalking episodes unknowingly lead her toward the remains of the place where Chitrasen was buried.
Her mysterious behaviour creates serious problems in her married life. Ram's mother, played by Lalita Pawar, becomes suspicious of Sita and believes that her strange disappearances may indicate an affair.
Sita suffers emotionally because she herself cannot explain why she is repeatedly drawn toward the mysterious location.
Her only major supporter within the family is Giridhar, played by Mehmood, who understands that Sita is not intentionally doing anything wrong and tries to protect her.
Eventually, Sita reaches the old ruins associated with Chitrasen. There she encounters the spirit of her former lover and the memories of her previous life become clear.
The meeting finally allows Chitrasen's soul to attain peace.
Sita becomes unconscious, and Ram ultimately finds and rescues her. The mystery is resolved, and Sita and Ram are able to continue their life together.
The film ultimately presents a story of love that survives death and transcends lifetimes, while also emphasizing forgiveness, devotion and the importance of understanding.
