Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) is a landmark Hindi epic period sports drama directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan. Set in 1893 during British rule in India, the film follows the villagers of Champaner, who are burdened by an oppressive tax and challenge British officers to a cricket match to avoid paying the increased lagaan.
The film stars Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne, with Raghuvir Yadav, Rajendra Gupta, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rajesh Vivek, Yashpal Sharma and others in supporting roles. The music was composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
Lagaan tells the story of Bhuvan, a courageous young farmer from the village of Champaner. The villagers are already struggling because of drought and heavy taxation imposed by the British. When Captain Andrew Russell decides to increase the land tax, Bhuvan refuses to accept the injustice.
Russell challenges the villagers to an unusual wager: if they can defeat the British officers in a game of cricket, their lagaan will be cancelled for three years. However, if they lose, they will have to pay three times the usual tax. Bhuvan accepts the challenge even though neither he nor the villagers knows how to play cricket.
Bhuvan begins training a team of villagers and teaches them the unfamiliar game. The team includes people from different backgrounds, and their journey gradually brings the entire village together. The story highlights unity, courage, determination and resistance against oppression.
The film's climax revolves around the decisive cricket match between the villagers and the British team. The match becomes much more than a sporting contest—it represents the villagers' struggle for freedom, dignity and justice.
The film received widespread critical acclaim and became one of the most celebrated films in Indian cinema. It was India's official entry for the 74th Academy Awards and received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, becoming only the third Indian film to receive such a nomination at that time.
At the 49th National Film Awards, Lagaan won the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. The official citation praised the film's depiction of the victory of the human spirit over oppression and its creative use of cricket as a metaphor for colonialism and nationalism.
