Hum Dono is a classic 1961 Hindi romantic drama film produced by Dev Anand under Navketan Films. The film stars Dev Anand in a double role, alongside Nanda and Sadhana. It was directed by Amarjeet, with Vijay Anand also credited as co-director/ghost director and as the writer of the screenplay and dialogue.
The story revolves around two army officers who look exactly alike: Captain Anand and Major Manohar Lal Verma. When Major Verma is presumed dead during the war, Captain Anand is asked to inform his family. Circumstances then lead him to temporarily take Verma's place, creating a complicated situation involving Verma's wife Ruma and Anand's beloved Mita.
The film is especially remembered for its memorable music by Jaidev and lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi, including the evergreen songs “Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar,” “Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya,” “Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Haalaat Pe Rona Aaya,” “Allah Tero Naam” and “Jahan Mein Aisa Kaun Hai.”
The film follows Captain Anand, played by Dev Anand, who is serving in the army. Anand has a romantic relationship with Mita, played by Sadhana.
Anand's fellow officer Major Manohar Lal Verma, also played by Dev Anand, is married to Ruma, played by Nanda. Anand and Verma look remarkably similar.
During the war, Major Verma is reported missing and presumed dead. Captain Anand is given the difficult responsibility of conveying the news to Verma's family.
When Anand reaches Verma's home, Ruma mistakes him for her husband. Because of the circumstances and Ruma's fragile emotional state, Anand finds himself taking on Verma's identity. This creates an increasingly complicated situation as Anand tries to protect Ruma while also remaining faithful to Mita.
The situation becomes even more complicated when Major Verma eventually returns alive but severely injured. He believes that Anand has taken his place in his home, leading to emotional confrontation and misunderstanding.
The story eventually reaches its resolution when the principal characters come together and the truth becomes clear. The film combines romance, war, family relationships, sacrifice, identity and misunderstanding.
