With its combination of comedy, romance, family drama and memorable performances by Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, Hero No. 1 became one of the well-known Hindi comedy films of the 1990s.
Hero No. 1 begins with Rajesh Malhotra, the son of wealthy businessman Dhanraj Malhotra, who feels restricted by his strict father. Rajesh leaves home and travels to Europe.
There he meets Meena, the granddaughter of Dinanath, who is also in Europe for her studies. Rajesh and Meena fall in love and decide to marry.
After returning to India, the couple informs their families about their relationship. However, a disagreement between their fathers creates an obstacle to their marriage.
Rajesh then comes up with an unusual plan. He disguises himself as Raju, a servant, and enters Meena's household. Rather than simply trying to impress the family, he helps each member overcome their personal problems.
He helps Vidya Nath with his insurance business, supports Pappi in his efforts to become a successful music composer, helps Shanno reconcile with her husband and encourages Dimple to change her lifestyle.
Through his kindness and efforts, Rajesh gradually wins the affection and respect of Meena's family. Eventually, his true identity is revealed, leading to a dramatic confrontation.
Meena stands by Rajesh and explains the sacrifices he made for their relationship. Dinanath eventually realizes that Rajesh genuinely loves Meena and accepts their relationship. The film concludes with Rajesh and Meena getting married.
