Maya Govind was a renowned Indian lyricist, poet, writer and theatre artist who made a significant contribution to Hindi film music. She wrote songs for around 350 films and is credited with more than 800 songs across films, television and music albums.
She became widely known for songs such as “Nainon Mein Darpan Hai,” “Kajre Ki Baati,” “Mera Piya Ghar Aaya,” “Main Khiladi Tu Anari,” “Aankhon Mein Base Ho Tum,” “Gale Mein Laal Taai” and “Maine Payal Hai Chhankai.”
Maya Govind was particularly notable for establishing herself as a successful female lyricist in an era when Hindi-film songwriting was largely dominated by men.
Maya Govind was born on 17 January 1940 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She developed an interest in poetry, music, dance and theatre from an early age. She received formal training in Kathak under the renowned dancer Shambhu Maharaj and also studied singing at Lucknow's Bhatkhande Music Institute.
She completed her B.A. and B.Ed. and worked as a teacher for around four years. Alongside her professional work, she continued writing poetry and began participating in poetry gatherings. Her first poetry performance at the Red Fort, Delhi, in 1959 marked the beginning of a long association with kavi sammelans and literary gatherings.
Maya Govind entered Hindi cinema as a lyricist in the early 1970s. Her first major film opportunity came with Aarop (1974), for which she wrote “Nainon Mein Darpan Hai.” The song, composed by Bhupen Hazarika and sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, brought her considerable recognition.
She subsequently wrote songs for numerous films, including Jalte Badan, Sawan Ko Aane Do, Takkar, Pighalta Aasman, Dalaal, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Yaarana, Gaj Gamini, Razia Sultan, Ganga Ki Kasam and Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam.
Her work extended beyond cinema. Maya Govind wrote title songs and other material for television programmes, including Kismat, Maayka, Phulwa, Vishnu Puran and Draupadi. She also wrote the hugely popular non-film song “Maine Payal Hai Chhankai,” famously sung by Falguni Pathak.
Maya Govind also had a strong connection with theatre. In 1970, she received the Best Actress Award from Sangeet Natak Akademi, Lucknow, for her performance as Venare Bai in the Hindi adaptation of Vijay Tendulkar's play Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai.
During her career, she worked with several prominent music composers, including Kalyanji-Anandji, Bappi Lahiri, Khayyam, Anu Malik and Dilip Sen–Sameer Sen.
Maya Govind died in Mumbai on 7 April 2022, at the age of 82. Reports stated that she had been suffering from health complications, including a brain blood clot, and died following a heart attack.
