Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, was one of India's most admired playback singers. Known for his smooth, soulful and versatile voice, he became a prominent voice in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and other Indian-language film music. Unlike many singers, KK built his career without relying heavily on public appearances or a conventional celebrity image, allowing his voice and songs to define his legacy.
KK became particularly popular for his romantic, emotional and youthful songs. Some of his best-known tracks include “Tadap Tadap Ke,” “Yaaron,” “Pal,” “Aankhon Mein Teri,” “Tu Aashiqui Hai,” “Sach Keh Raha Hai Deewana,” “Zara Sa,” “Khuda Jaane,” “Aankhon Se Batana,” and “Tu Jo Mila.”
Krishnakumar Kunnath was born on 23 August 1968 in Delhi, India. He developed a passion for music at an early age, although he did not initially plan to become a professional playback singer.
KK attended Mount St. Mary's School in Delhi and later graduated from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, with a degree in commerce. Before entering the film industry, he worked in marketing and sales, but his love for music eventually encouraged him to pursue singing professionally.
He began his musical journey by performing at live shows and singing jingles for advertisements. He reportedly recorded thousands of advertising jingles before getting his major opportunity in the Indian film industry.
KK moved to Mumbai to pursue a career as a professional singer. His early work in advertising helped him develop his voice and recording experience.
His major breakthrough came when music composer A. R. Rahman gave him the opportunity to sing for Tamil cinema. KK's voice was featured in songs such as “Kalluri Salai” and “Strawberry Kanne,” helping introduce him to a wider audience.
He later became one of the most sought-after male playback singers in Bollywood.
KK's major Hindi-film breakthrough came with the song “Tadap Tadap Ke” from the 1999 film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Composed by Ismail Darbar, the emotional song became a major hit and established KK as a powerful voice for romantic and melancholic songs.
Another landmark in his career was the album Pal, released in 1999. The title song “Pal” and “Yaaron” became enormously popular, particularly among young listeners, and continue to be associated with friendship, nostalgia and farewell moments.
Some of KK's most memorable songs include:
KK was particularly admired for the natural quality of his voice. His singing could move effortlessly between romantic melodies, rock-influenced songs, emotional ballads, friendship anthems and energetic Bollywood numbers.
Unlike singers who were primarily associated with a particular actor, KK's voice was used for a wide variety of performers and characters. His ability to convey emotion without excessive vocal ornamentation became one of his greatest strengths.
KK's debut non-film album Pal was released in 1999 and became an important part of his career.
The songs “Pal” and “Yaaron” became timeless youth anthems. “Yaaron,” in particular, became strongly associated with friendship, college life and nostalgia and continued to be performed and played at farewell events for many years.
The album helped establish KK as an artist beyond Bollywood playback singing.
Although KK became best known for Hindi songs, he also recorded extensively in other Indian languages, particularly Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali.
His association with A. R. Rahman during the early stages of his career helped him enter South Indian film music. His multilingual work demonstrated his ability to adapt his voice to different musical traditions.
KK received several awards and nominations during his career.
Some notable recognitions include:
Although he did not win as many major awards as some of his contemporaries, his popularity among listeners remained exceptionally strong.
KK generally preferred to let his music speak for itself rather than pursue celebrity status. He rarely appeared in music videos and maintained a relatively private public image.
His philosophy was reflected in his approach to singing: he concentrated on the emotion and melody of a song rather than attempting to make every performance technically elaborate.
KK continued performing live concerts throughout his career.
On 31 May 2022, KK performed at a concert in Kolkata. After returning to his hotel, he reportedly complained of feeling unwell and subsequently collapsed.
He was taken to CMRI Hospital in Kolkata, where he was declared dead. He was 53 years old.
His sudden death shocked the Indian music industry and millions of fans. Many singers, actors, composers and musicians paid tribute to him, remembering his distinctive voice and contribution to Indian film music.
