Godmother tells the story of Rambhi, a woman whose life changes after her husband Veeram becomes involved in the criminal world. When drought threatens their livelihood, Rambhi and Veeram leave their village in search of better opportunities. Veeram gradually becomes a powerful figure after killing a local goonda and is subsequently drawn into the political and criminal network controlled by Kesubhai.

After Veeram discovers the consequences of the violence he has committed and attempts to change his path, he is killed. Rambhi is then forced to confront the political and criminal forces surrounding her family. She eventually takes control of the situation and becomes a powerful figure herself. However, when her son Karsan follows the same path of violence and power, Rambhi realizes the consequences of the world she has helped create.

The film combines crime, political drama and family conflict to portray Rambhi's transformation from a village woman into a powerful and influential figure. Shabana Azmi's performance as Rambhi was widely recognized, and she won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the role.
