Geet Gaata Chal follows Shyam, an orphan who earns his living by singing and dancing at various occasions. His free-spirited nature leads him to a family headed by Durga Babu and Ganga, who take him into their home. There, Shyam meets their daughter Radha, and she gradually falls in love with him.
Shyam, however, values his freedom and does not initially understand Radha's feelings. When he discovers that the family wants him to marry Radha, he feels trapped, comparing the situation to being a bird inside a cage. He leaves the family, deeply hurting Radha and creating an emotional conflict that drives the story forward.
The film beautifully combines romance, family emotions, music and the desire for personal freedom. Its songs are central to the storytelling, with memorable numbers such as “Geet Gata Chal,” “Shyam Teri Bansi Pukare Radha Naam,” “Dharti Meri Mata Pita Aasman,” “Kar Gaya Kanha Milan Ka Vaada” and “Bachpan Har Gham Se Begana Hota Hai.”
The film's music was composed and its lyrics were written by Ravindra Jain, while playback singers included Jaspal Singh, Aarti Mukherjee, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi and Hemlata.
