About Shakila

Shakila was born as Badshah Begum on 1 January 1935. Sources differ on the precise birthplace, with biographical records describing it broadly as the Middle East or the former British Indian region. Her family had ancestral connections to Afghanistan and Iran, and she later moved to Bombay with her family.

She entered films as a child artist and appeared in Dastaan (1949). She subsequently worked in films including Duniya, Sindbad the Sailor, Lal Pari, Alibaba and 40 Thieves and Hatim Tai.

Her major breakthrough came with Guru Dutt's Aar Paar (1954). Shakila played an important role in the film, and the songs picturised on her, particularly “Babuji Dheere Chalna� and “Hoon Abhi Main Jawan,� became closely associated with her career.

She subsequently appeared opposite Dev Anand in C.I.D. (1956) and worked with leading stars including Shammi Kapoor and Sunil Dutt. Her other notable films included Post Box 999 (1958), China Town (1962) and Ustadon Ke Ustad (1963).

Shakila's film career lasted roughly 14 years, during which she appeared in more than 50 films. She left the film industry after her marriage in 1963 and moved abroad. She later returned to Mumbai but chose not to make a full comeback to acting.

Shakila died on 20 September 2017 in Mumbai at the age of 82 after suffering a heart attack.
