Krishna Kalle was born on 18 December 1940 in Karwar, Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, India. Although her family was originally from Karwar, she spent much of her childhood in Kanpur, where her father was employed. She developed an interest in music at an early age and began singing publicly during her teenage years.
At the age of 16, she started singing on the Kanpur station of All India Radio and also participated in stage performances in Uttar Pradesh. Her early success in music competitions helped establish her reputation as a talented young singer.
During a visit to Bombay, singer Arun Date heard her sing and introduced her to music director Yashwant Deo, who was working with the Bombay station of AIR. Deo gave her the opportunity to record the Marathi song “Man Pisaat Majhe.” The song became popular and opened the door to further opportunities in Marathi music.
Musical Career
From around 1960, Krishna Kalle began broadcasting regularly on All India Radio as an A-grade artist. She subsequently developed a career in both Marathi and Hindi film music.
Her career in the film industry lasted approximately a decade from the 1960s into the 1970s. According to Cinemaazi, her repertoire included around 200 Hindi film songs, 100 Marathi film songs, two Kannada film songs, as well as approximately 100 bhajans, ghazals, and devotional songs.
She worked with several celebrated singers, including Mohammed Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Mukesh, and Manna Dey. Her Hindi film recordings included both solo songs and memorable duets.
