About Kamal Barot
Kamal Barot was born into a Gujarati family in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and developed an interest in singing during childhood. She later moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) in the late 1950s to pursue a career in Hindi film music.
She made her playback singing debut with the 1957 Hindi film Sharada, where she participated in a group performance alongside Asha Bhosle, Shamshad Begum, and Chandrabala. Her early career developed gradually, and a meeting with music composer Kalyanji led to opportunities to sing in films such as Madari and O Tera Kya Kehna in 1959.
During the 1960s, Kamal Barot recorded numerous songs for Hindi films. Although much of her work consisted of duets, trios, and group numbers, several of these recordings became enduring classics. Her unusual, slightly nasal yet expressive voice gave her a distinctive identity among the many female playback singers of the period.
One of the biggest milestones of her career was “Hansta Hua Noorani Chehra” from Parasmani (1963), composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The song became highly popular and is still considered one of the best-known songs associated with Kamal Barot.
