Meera tells the story of Meera Bai, a Rajput princess whose devotion to Lord Krishna becomes the central force of her life. From an early age, Meera considers Krishna her true husband and develops an unwavering spiritual relationship with him.
Meera is married to Rana Bhojraj as part of a political alliance between two royal families. However, marriage does not change her devotion to Krishna. Her spiritual beliefs, simple way of life and refusal to follow the expectations of royal society create increasing conflict with her husband and his family.
As opposition to Meera's devotion grows, she faces accusations, isolation and imprisonment. Even when she is ordered to drink poison as punishment, she remains fearless and continues to sing praises of Lord Krishna. Her unwavering faith ultimately becomes a symbol of spiritual strength and devotion.
Gulzar presented Meera's life from a historical and social perspective, rather than treating it solely as a mythological story. The film is also notable for its devotional soundtrack composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar. Vani Jairam performed the film's principal bhajans and won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her work, including the memorable “Mere To Giridhar Gopal.”
