The story begins with Ramu, an orphan who is physically disabled and struggling to make a living.
One day, Ramu saves a boy from an accident and discovers that the boy, Mohan, is blind.
Mohan has come to the city while searching for his sister, who has left their village to become a nurse. Ramu and Mohan gradually become close friends.
Although both boys face major difficulties, they complement one another.
Ramu can see but has a physical disability, while Mohan cannot see but possesses his own abilities and determination.
Their friendship allows them to overcome obstacles that would have been much harder to face alone.
As they struggle with poverty and uncertainty, their bond becomes increasingly strong.
The story also introduces other people who influence their lives, including Ashok, whose circumstances create another emotional dimension to the narrative.
Ultimately, Dosti shows that true friendship is not based on physical ability, wealth or social position. It is based on trust, understanding, loyalty and mutual support.
The music of Dosti was composed by the legendary duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal, with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The soundtrack played a major role in the film's popularity.
Most of the songs were sung by Mohammed Rafi, while Lata Mangeshkar lent her voice to “Gudiya Humse Roothi Rahogi.”
“Chahunga Main Tujhe Saanjh Savere” became the signature song of Dosti.
Mohammed Rafi's emotional rendition, combined with Majrooh Sultanpuri's lyrics and Laxmikant–Pyarelal's composition, captured the depth of the friendship at the heart of the film.
Rafi won the Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer for the song, while Majrooh Sultanpuri won Best Lyricist.
The major themes of Dosti include:
The film's strongest message is that a genuine friendship can give people strength even when life places enormous obstacles in their path.
Dosti had an exceptional awards run.
At the 12th Filmfare Awards, the film won six awards from seven nominations, making it the most-awarded film at that ceremony.
The film also received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
Dosti was also selected as India's official entry at the 4th Moscow International Film Festival in 1965, giving the film recognition beyond India.
