Anand is the grandson of wealthy businessman Dwarkadas. He has grown up surrounded by money and comfort but is unhappy with the direction his grandfather wants his life to take.
When his grandfather expects him to marry a wealthy girl, Anand rebels. He leaves his luxurious home and decides to live independently and prove that he can survive without his family's money.
Anand eventually reaches Bombay, where he experiences the hardships of ordinary life. He takes on different jobs and becomes acquainted with people from a much simpler social background.
During this period, he meets Renu, a kind and compassionate young woman. Their friendship gradually turns into love. Renu, however, has difficulties of her own and is concealing an important secret from her family.
Anand's experiences change his attitude toward life. The young man who once took wealth and privilege for granted begins to understand that love, friendship, dignity, and human relationships are more valuable than money.
The story then develops through misunderstandings, family opposition, secrets, and separation before eventually moving toward reconciliation and a happy resolution.
