Lajwanti is the younger sister of wealthy businessman Shambhunath. Because her family places greater importance on wealth than education, Lajwanti grows up without learning to read and write. Her lack of education does not initially seem important because she lives a comfortable life.
After her marriage, however, Lajwanti discovers that her illiteracy makes her vulnerable. Her husband and in-laws begin treating her with disrespect, and her inability to read or understand important matters becomes a constant source of humiliation.
The situation eventually becomes unbearable, and Lajwanti is thrown out of her marital home while she is pregnant. Alone and without financial security, she is forced to struggle for herself and her child.
Her difficult journey gradually changes her understanding of life. She realizes that wealth alone cannot provide security and that education is essential for a woman's independence and dignity.
The film therefore transforms Lajwanti's personal suffering into a broader message about women's education and empowerment.
The music was composed by Madan Mohan, with lyrics by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Playback singers associated with the soundtrack include Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, and Mahendra Kapoor.

Other songs from the soundtrack further establish the film's emotional and romantic atmosphere.
The central message of Anpadh is the importance of educating girls and women. Rather than portraying illiteracy simply as a personal weakness, the film shows how denying education can leave a woman dependent on others and vulnerable to exploitation.
Lajwanti's transformation becomes the emotional foundation of the story, making the film particularly relevant to discussions about female education, dignity, self-reliance, and social equality.
