Priya Rajvansh was an Indian Hindi film actress remembered for her distinctive screen presence, refined personality and memorable performances in films such as Haqeeqat, Heer Raanjha and Hanste Zakhm. Unlike many actresses of her era, she had formal training in theatre at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Her film career was brief but highly selective, spanning only a handful of films between 1964 and 1986.
Priya Rajvansh was born Veera Sunder Singh on 30 December 1936 in Shimla, then part of British India. Her father, Sunder Singh, worked in the Forest Department. She grew up in Shimla and developed an interest in theatre and acting during her school and college years.
She studied at Auckland House and Convent of Jesus and Mary in Shimla. She later attended St. Bede's College and became involved in English theatre performances at Shimla's historic Gaiety Theatre. After completing her studies in India, she went to London and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she studied acting.
While Priya was in London, photographs of her eventually reached filmmaker Chetan Anand. He saw potential in her and offered her a role in his war drama Haqeeqat (1964). The film, starring Dharmendra and Priya Rajvansh among others, became an important Hindi war film and marked her entry into cinema.
Her association with Chetan Anand became the defining feature of her professional life. She subsequently appeared exclusively in films directed by him, making her filmography unusually small but distinctive.
Priya Rajvansh's most celebrated role came in Heer Raanjha (1970), where she portrayed the legendary heroine Heer opposite Raaj Kumar. The film was based on the famous Punjabi love story associated with poet Waris Shah and featured music by Madan Mohan with lyrics by Kaifi Azmi. Priya's portrayal of Heer remains the role most closely associated with her career.
She followed it with several notable performances:
Among these, Hanste Zakhm (1973) is particularly remembered for her performance, while Kudrat gave her the opportunity to appear alongside Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. Her final film was Haathon Ki Lakeeren, released in 1986.
Priya Rajvansh shared a long-term personal and professional relationship with filmmaker Chetan Anand. She became closely involved with his creative world and, according to accounts of her career, contributed to aspects of filmmaking beyond acting. Their association continued until Chetan Anand's death in 1997.
Some memorable songs associated with Priya Rajvansh include “Zara Si Aahat Hoti Hai” from Haqeeqat, “Milo Na Tum To Hum Ghabraye” from Heer Raanjha, “Betaab Dil Ki Tamanna” and “Aaj Socha To Aansoo Bhar Aaye” from Hanste Zakhm, and “Hai Tere Saath Meri Wafa” from Hindustan Ki Kasam.
Priya Rajvansh died on 27 March 2000 in Mumbai, aged 63. Her death was a tragic end to the life of an actress whose career had been deliberately selective. She appeared in only seven films, yet her portrayal of Heer and her performances in Chetan Anand's films gave her a lasting place in the history of Hindi cinema.
