Ajay Singh comes from a respectable family and meets Asha Chibber, a young woman he believes is wealthy. After some misunderstandings, he discovers that Asha actually comes from a comparatively poor family.
Despite the difference in their backgrounds, Ajay falls genuinely in love with Asha. He meets her brother Dr. O. P. Chibber and his wife Shanti, and the families agree to the marriage.
After their marriage, Ajay and Asha begin their life together. However, Ajay's widowed mother Gayetridevi has strong expectations about the family's future. She desperately wants a male child who can continue the family line.
When Asha gives birth to a daughter, Gayetridevi becomes unhappy and blames Asha for failing to provide a son.
The situation becomes even more tragic when Asha is involved in an accident and loses her eyesight.
Asha's blindness changes the family's circumstances dramatically. She is separated from Ajay and must face an uncertain future while carrying the emotional burden of believing that she has lost her place in her husband's life.
Ajay, however, continues to love his wife. The story ultimately becomes a test of whether their marriage can survive family pressure, separation, disability, misunderstanding, and social expectations.
The emotional conclusion reinforces the importance of genuine marital love and the bond between husband and wife.
The music of Chirag was composed by Madan Mohan, with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
"Teri Aankhon Ke Siva" is the film's most celebrated song. It was recorded separately in male and female versions, with Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar providing the vocals. The song remains one of Madan Mohan's memorable romantic compositions.

The film particularly questions the idea that a woman's value within a family should depend on whether she gives birth to a son.
